An avid gardener, Carol discovered the world of gourds a few years ago while on a trip to Austin.  Their natural, earthy beauty has opened yet another avenue for her creativity.  She grows many of the gourd she uses, but also has an aunt in northern Alabama who "grows some of the finest gourds she's ever seen".  After they've been dried (which can take several months), and cleaned on the outside, the interior must be cleaned and sanded before the exterior is decorated.  Using several techniques to complete the project, such as pyrography, leather dye, acrylic paint, piecing several gourds together -- perhaps a little grapevine or long-leaf pine accent -- it all depends on what the finished piece is to "become".  Sometimes the gourds are mounted on a wooden frame to which plaster and stones or other decorative items have been added.  "I find gourds to be very inspiring to the creative process.  They are an organic medium, which I really like, and they seem to take on the form of the finished piece before my work even begins."
